Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Hack Name: Pokémon Prototype

Hack Of: Pokémon Red

Introduction: This is a hack I have been working on for a while now, and it is coming along very nicely. Much of the game is completely redone to give you a new fresh experience, while still maintaining that traditional Pokémon game feel. An important purpose of this thread is to get lots of feedback from people on my hack. I'll ask many questions and I'm very interested in your ideas and opinions. Here's what I have so far...

Team:
Danny-E 33 - Engine/Story/Scripting
jwibagi - Mapping
Mickey-A 42 - Composing

Story: You are a teenager who gets his first Pokémon from a professor who lives next door, Prof. Oak. He tells you about the recent advancements made by Pokémon scientists and researchers. Scientists from Cinnabar Island have been researching an ancient Pokémon that's believed to be extinct named Mew. After studying Mew's DNA long enough, the scientists attempted to create a Prototype clone that they called Mewtwo. The Prototype destroyed the research lab on Cinnabar Island and escaped. Prof. Oak asks you and his grandson to work together to gather all the information you can and find out where Mewtwo has gone. He informs you that Team Rocket, a group of Pokémon thugs, has already began an intense investigation to track down the Prototype. If Team Rocket gets their hands on Mewtwo, they could use that power to take down anyone who gets in their way. You must assemble a powerful team of Pokémon and get to Mewtwo before Team Rocket!

Features:
-A snazzy new title screen
-A brand new region, mapped by jwibagi
-Original music, composed by Mickey-A 42
-Pokémon and trainer sprites from GSC (no more pixely back sprites!)
-A fully functional EXP bar, like in GSC
-A whole new font
-Wild Pokémon data changed (Pokédex completion is possible within the game)
-Rival's, Gym Leaders', Elite Four's, other trainers' parties modified
-Items in marts, Game Corner prizes, in-game trades, and npc gifts are different
-ALL CAPS WORDS removed

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Definitely looks like you're off to a good start. Looking forward to seeing some more progress on it, but you look like you're already getting after it pretty well. Keep at it!

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

I think you skipped a line when you were reading Nuggz. The screenshots are comparing this hack to Gold, hence the different backsprites, but he mentioned wanting to replace the back sprites as well.

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Correct. That screenshot is for the purpose of showing the new battlescreen made to mimic the GSC battlescreen as close as possible. Mostly refering to the health bar and text border. If you really pay attention, you might even notice that the font for "PKMN" has been changed to match GSC instead of the RBY font for "PKMN".

The only minor differences (in the enemy health bar) are unavoidable (aside from the intentional differences, such as the ALL CAPS titles, "Item" instead of "Pack" and the custom arrow) unless perhaps I knew where the tile arranger for this screen was and perhaps the pointer to the tiles so I could repoint it to free space and add 2 additional tiles. That might work, but it's also always possible that I have no idea what I'm talking about :P

And I'm still working on adding support for 6x6 backsprites. When I do, I will reupload this pic with the much nicer GSC backsprite for Bulbasaur. Also when I eventually reupload this, you might notice a few minor improvements, like the palettes for the health bar and the palette for Pidgey now match GSC. Since you can see the health bar obviously uses a different shade of green and a different shade of yellow for "HP:". These have been fixed for sometime now, but I won't bother reuploading this screenshot until I have a working 6x6 backsprite for Bulbasaur.

And I thought it should have been obvious the second screeshot is from Gold and not my hack since it includes Chikorita and I am not adding any Pokemon to my gen 1 hack :P

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

That's ok :)

I actually haven't made enough progress to release this hack yet. This thread is just to show my progress so far. If I learn enough and get enough time to work on this, I may release a demo in a few months.

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

I'm have three more question. It's pkm red right? So you'll make a pokemon red in color? If it is, i think it'll be the best of the best hack ever. Last thing, will you change any stats for pokemon(s)?

No, it definitely is not. :) I was just too busy in these last two weeks with band camp, so no work has been made on this lately. But now I'm back to work! :D

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Yeah, updates are gonna be pretty slow. Taking 6 advanced classes doesn't leave much time for rom hacking :P and marching band and a job. So my plate's a little full for the moment. But I promise, I won't ever stop working on this. It just might not always be my top priority.

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Well an update has been well over due!

I've completely redone the screenshot section. Here's what's new:
Added support for unique trainer palettes and seperate palettes for Venusaur's/Ivysaur's back sprites (thanks to stag019)
Added support for 6x6 back sprites (thanks to Sawakita)
Added in an awesome player back sprite (credit for the sprite goes to Poketto)
Returned the title screen sprite and the overworld sprite for the player back to the original sprites now that I'm using Poketto's back sprite instead of Gold's back sprite.
Changed the palette used for the Pokeballs at the start of a battle to the red health bar palette without screwing up the health bars' palette once you send out a Pokemon (thanks to Sawakita)
Added my sprite recolors that I'm using in my hack done by me (some from GSC, some from Yellow, one from Green)

I think soon I'm going to add a credits section cause at this point there has definitely been a significant amount of help from several great people around here.
I'm also gonna add a sprite sheet of all the trainer sprites that I'm using in my hack that Poketto has provided. DONE

Oh! I also tacked on my hack's support banner at the end of the first post, in case any of you want to add it to your sig on PC ;)
It would be greatly appreciated :)

Man, this is great. I love the updated palettes and everything. That's the only the thing that was not-awesome about RBY. Kudos.

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Wow, thank you, everyone, for all your support! :)

I've updated one of the screenshots to show the player vs. the rival. I gave the rival a custom palette because I really hate the purple/yellow palette that sprite originally has.
I'm not sure how I feel about it yet though.. What do you all think?

And what do you think about the rest of the Pokemon recolors? Are they accurate enough?
I've been really back and forth with the entire Machop family.. But I think I finally settled on a Machamp palette I like.
But what about Machoke? Is his blue/grey too strong?

Re: Red hack: Pokémon Prototype

Yeah, I definitely hated the yellow in the rival's palette more than I hated the blue/purple color. Is it better now?

And why do you say Porygon's front and back sprites need a different palette?
