Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

For now, I was thinking it would only edit the pointers and include documentation of how to edit the move/evo data so that the program wouldn't be as complex at first. But I would like eventually to have it support editing attacks/evo data and automagically or manually repoint it if you need to add more. But for the first release, I figure just editing the pointer is a good start.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

Coupla questions:
Will this be cross-platform?
Do you think you could support Generation I too?
What language are you programming it in? Would you need any help? I'd be able to help if need be. At the very least provide offsets for Generation I if you decide to support it.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

I don't really plan on making it cross platform at this time, because the only language I know how to program in is VB6. I'll release the source code if someone wants to recode it in another language for cross platform support, but it won't be practical for me to do it at this time at my current skill level. It's not a very complex program, so I'm sure it could easily be ported to something else if anyone wants to. I'll make sure to leave comments in the source code of course.

Since the formats are different, it would be better suited to make a separate editor for RBY instead of including it in this editor.

The other night I got some free time and have it halfway coded. As in, it will load everything and let you mess with it, I just need to get around to coding in the save function and test it out. Its not a very complex program, so I don't really need any help, so much as free time without interruptions haha. But thanks for the offer, and if anything changes about that I'll let you know!

Really? It seems to me, with the data that you're editing, is the same between Gen I and II, just II having a few extra things that I doesn't. My Pokedex takes the same code, only showing a few extra things in Generation II.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

Well Gold has some added things, and red also has some different things like the level 1 moves included in the stats, and I'd want to add those as well. Although I guess it would be doable, but I tend to prefer when tools are generation specific, because I sort my tools by generation, with the exception of General Gameboy tools like hex editors and tlp and pointer berechner and all. But I may add it.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

First post has been updated, Editor and commented VB6 source code are released!

Also, @Aicy - I will probably add that to a future version. Right now, the name can be easily edited when importing a new sprite with Agixp, but it would definitely be a handy addition. Unfortunately I didn't see your post until I had already released this version.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

Haven't really tried to do anything with it yet, but I have noticed:
1. Attempting to save without a file open brings an error
2. Trying to open a file, then canceling instead brings an error

But anyways, the other thing I wanted to mention was that the UI seems just a tad cluttered. When I originally wanted to work on a project for this (Gen I oriented, but I was going to expand it to Gen II), I made an HTML/Javascript mockup here (if you want to ignore the popup box you can, it just sets the gradient for the title bar). Also, view in Chrome or Opera or anything else that supports HTML5 input type extensions (Firefox currently does not). Also, pretend the buttons are tabs. If you'd like to incorporate it, you can.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

Thanks for linking to that, it might be worth a go for another version.

Also, I'll take a look at those errors. The saving without a file open isn't a big deal, but the Open->Cancel one could be frustrating.
In the meantime, I guess just don't click save without a file open, and don't click open unless you plan on opening a ROM.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

It hit me on the way to class what those errors are from. Should be fixed later today.

EDIT: Came home between classes and messed with it while I was thinking about it. It will now:
-Tell you that you cannot save without a ROM open
-Not throw errors when you cancel opening a ROM
-Automatically load Bulbasaur when you load a ROM (fixed errors if you tried to Save without first loading a Pokemon)
-The Exit button will now actually do something

I don't have time to upload the new files and update the first post, but it will be up later today.

EDIT 2: The updated copy of the program and source code are now available. Check the first post for download mirrors.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

It is the pointer to their move/evolution data. This was actually mentioned in the Readme file that came with the program. It is editable here to make it easier to jump to and edit a pokemon's moves and evolutions in a hex editor, and it makes it easier to repoint them if you need to add more (although the program cannot do this for you).

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

If you repoint Piloswine's moves, then yes, you could go in and add an evolution. But again, all this tool will let you do is edit the pointer, you will have to edit the  evolution data and find the blank space manually as of right now.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

I'm having a minor (but annoying) issue with the evolution/levelup move pointer thing - I can use it to repoint successfully, but as soon as I enter some data in the blank space that I've repointed to in a hex editor, the program sets the pointer back to the default and I have to change it and save it again for it to stick. Is there a way to avoid this happening?

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

If you tried to have it open in two programs at once, you are always going to have problems like this. Change the pointer, save, and exit pokemon editor. Then open in your hex editor and edit at the new location. If you opened it in the hex editor before you saved the pointer and edit it from there, the file saved by the hex editor won't have the new pointer saved. This isn't a bug caused by the editor, it is a bug caused by trying to edit it in two programs at once, if I'm reading it correctly.

Re: [Now Available!] Pokémon Editor Ultimate

Ahhh. That makes sense. I did have it open in two programs at once, since generally that doesn't cause me any problems and it saves me a bit of time, so now I feel kind of silly! Good to know the issue's easily avoidable, then; thanks.
