Pokémon: Tweaks

Hack Name: Pokémon: Tweaks

Hack of: Pokémon Gold

Are you a fan of 2nd generation?
Ever tried playing Nuzlocke challenge and liked its concept?
Do you know every single secret or event and playing the game 100th time from the start isn't as fun as it was in the past?
Do you miss the feeling of not knowing what would happen next during gameplay?
Would you enjoy beating the game again if there were new, unkown adventures yet to be experienced?

The more there were yes in your answers, the more you will like my hack.

Features:
Brand new regions
Gives the fresh feel of many incoming adventures.
Heaps of sidequests
No mindless beating gym leader so the guy standing on the next route dissapears so you can go to next town and beat another gym leader because some dude blocks the entrance to cave leading to next gym.
Professional "feel"
Are you also irritated to play a hack where you find a HP Up on first route but have no potions to heal your pokemon? This won't happen here. The goal of this game is to look as if it was made by professionals.
Full support for Nuzlockers
Broad availability of different kinds of Pokemon early game, so every new Nuzlocke Challenge feels different! Making the game Nuzlocke-friendly is one of primary goals of this hack.
Minor alterations of Pokemon
Few Pokemon will have their types altered, some will be strengthened (everything within reason) guided by my own sense of balance. For example: Onix will be Rock type only - there is no Rock only pokemon in the game (except for Sudowoodo), and I find it sad that most Rock pokemons' second type is Ground causing them to die instantly from any water/grass attack (even Bubble, come on).

More information will be provided later, I will post every few weeks informing of progress. Game will be finished in (at least) several months - it really takes lots of time to edit it. The reason I'm posting now is to inform some people that it's still worth to visit this page in anticipation of good games (I'm not implying anything here, there are many promising hacks in progress)

Thanks & Credits
There will be time for that. At this moment I'd want to thank all of the members who participated in writing/adding tutorials/tools, every of you has helped me in some way. Keep posting tutorials, you're doing a great job, I practically learned most of stuff without asking any questions.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

This looks quite impressive although I've to say I liked the original mountain palettes more than these green ones.

Also, since you're planning on making this a "nuzlocke-hack", I've uploaded the "tools" for that (although only for silver at the moment). There is a small hack out by me which makes it so that if one of your pokemon faints, it will die and leave the party for good. Not sure if you're interested in having an add-on like this though.

Looks like a really neat hack I must say! I love screenshots, so visually stimulating.

I'd have to agree on that one though. Maybe introduce custom tiles to make a grassy elevation?

One thing I always look for are custom character sprites for the Player.
I just can't bear playing as Red/Gold in a hack that is supposed to be a new region.
I hope that comes along as the hack progresses.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

I like everything except the Nuzlocke idea. I have always thought the nuzlocke playthrough was dumb and not fun personally so if nuzlocke features are hard-coded in this, I probably won't be playing it (Not hating on anyone who is a fan of nuzlocke, I'm just saying I'm not one myself). But the rest of it looks and sounds good. I like the idea of jumping off larger hills that it looks like you're implementing, and I like the way you're putting the extended tilesets to use (also, glad I'm not the only one who liked Ruby's idea of entering a forest without going through a gate house. I mean seriously, in real life, how often do you walk through a gate if you want to go into the woods? lol). One question though, are there both brown and green mountains, or only the green ones?

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

Thanks for feedback guys, I have to straighten few things:

- these "green moutains" aren't really mountains, they are supposed to be hills - this tileset appears only in one region which contains of few maps. Think of them as of this - I want to create a feel of a pure, green lands with rivers of crystallic water. Rest (most of) maps moutain palette will be brown, like in original game.

- now the Nuzlocke part - I'm not going to implement any scripts - player can do all the actions by himself. Maybe i put things inaccurately: by being Nuzlocke friendly I meant making many kinds of Pokemon catchable as early as possible (Dark pokemon catchable only after Elite Four in original game is something i want to avoid). Wide selection of pokemon will make every Nuzlocke challenge original. I will also try to tenderly 'force' some unusual Pokemon into game by altering them, making them habit more maps, tradeable or parts of a quest. For example, who, if decides to have a Flying pokemon, chooses Farfetch'D over Pidgeot, Fearow or Dodrio?

And about custom character's sprite - I will take this into account in further phase of hack development.

I am looking forward to this! But, are you going to release preliminary beta's? Or did you mean that you will only release the final version?
If you are releasing beta's, I'd like to participate in helping you find the bugs (I didn't get to do this for other hacks because I was too busy but now I have time!).

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

Awesome, sounds great! And nice, I do like the way you are using the lush hills and the rock ones together. Perhaps a new graphic could be used for the grassy hills to give them a smoother less rocky texture? But still, very nice idea.
Also, thanks for clarifying on the nuzlocke part, and I also like the increased Pokemon diversity as well. Looking to be very promising, but take your time working on it. I don't want to rush you because I know that these things take time (and that hey, sometimes you go a while without an update because you have other things you do with your life, lol).

Like kkj1116, I could also beta-test the hack if you like to (never done that before so might as well do so once at least).
You could e-mail me through this site (or reply here of course) if you want me to do so (I could also help you with several scripts and structures if you need me) :)

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

Time for some small update :)

This is a small Fight Club. You are going to fight with other trainer in order to satisfy blood lusting audience (I exaggerated a bit). The first prize is going to be "one-time special" Flash HM. You can fight once per day. Its script is done, I only need to put some stronger trainers as game will progress and put some prizes like HP UPs or a TM. Maybe even a Pokemon. As you see, I have many possibilities to make it fun ;)

scaled.php?server=515&filename=40394717.png&res=landing72654417.png74468389.png66270172.png61744143.png

I swear this shiny Cyndaquil isn't cheated, I really got it from lab! Also this made me thinking about increasing shininess chance from 1/8192 to 1/512 or 1/1024..
12416112.png58729653.png73076538.png29997524.png36857444.pngscaled.php?server=232&filename=98263711.png&res=landing

I put in few new attacks and started to rework Pokemon learnsets. Mud Slap won't be a TM given by Gym Leader so some Pokemon will learn this move by level-ups - e.g. Wooper. I want these 0/1-evolution Pokemon to stand up to strong two-evolution families which learn many moves and in the end have some powerful move like Hydro Pump - for example Murkrow is pretty crap with Faint Attack as strongest move.

And an important question to you people:
What would you say if I added few fakemon? I would rather do that than importing Pokemon from next gens. Some new type combinations would bring novelty to game (e.g. there's no pure Ice or Steel type Pokemon). This would also bring back the "wtf is this Kingdra, how do I beat it" feeling.

Also, I really need someone to tell me how to add new attack effects, like 3rd gen's Bulk Up or Will-o' Wisp.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

Nice idea and the way you implemented it looks impressive!
Is Howl using Growl's animation or is that a new one?

About fakemon, as long as they look good, do as you wish. I don't mind having some fakemon around especially if there will be lots of original pokemon from Gen I & II still available.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

Howl is using Roar animation. Same as Growl but the cry is not lengthened.

If I had to make room for Fakemon, I'd first get rid of baby Pokemon who only make pokedex completion harder (you evolve them or put in box after hatching out). Next, I would propably delete few rarer legendaries, like Mew or Celebi. Legendaries like Entei and Zapdos can still take part in game. I don't think I would remove anything else (well, maybe Porygons -> 2 new moves in place of Conversions)

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

Neat idea with the Fight Club concept!
And about your Fakemon, I've never been a fan of Fakemon. But it is your hack.
What I suggest, however, is that you add post-Gen 2 Pokemon since you are adding post-Gen 2 moves.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

I'm not really into adding next-gen Pokemon, because it's weird to me to import only few Pokemon from other region. Either all, or none. And faking their cries is a big issue for me too ;)

I tried spriting this fake evolution of Muk by myself and here is the result:
muk3.png
What do you think about it? I suck at lighting and shading and it looks a bit flat when compared to Muk from Gold (89.png). But it doesn't really look that bad. You can say goodbye to Smoochum as this big pile of toxic waste takes its place. It's going to have a funky type combination.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

Sprite could use some work to make it look more natural, but I'm excited about the funky type combo.
What's it going to be? Poison and .. ?

* I was thinking you could use that new Fakemon to say it's a more hazardous grime Pokemon that replaced Muk since the city's garbage was so bad.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

I realized it's better to make this pokemon an alternative evolution of Muk. And yes, he will play a role in game's plot. You're thinking in a right direction. The combination will be Poison/Dark, an interesting twist to those who use Psychic against Poison.

Here's a suggestion:
Since your Toxic-er Muk (will you reveal the name?) is very plot related, you should make other Fakemon that are heavily plot related as well.
An urban-centered hack would be nice I'm thinking. Fakemon that have to deal with pollution, industrialization, technology..
Of course these are just my ideas.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

I have few words to say (no screenshots today):

I'm giving up on Fakemon - making sprites is a bit of work while there are some nice Pokemon from newer gens I could add to my hack. Trying hard can lead to depression and abandonment of project ;) how many projects promised gold mountains and their authors simply vanished? I swear the only ASM thing I'm going to do is adding new attack effects and editing some of them (prolonging Sandstorm, etc.)

I'm going to add newer gen Pokemon in place of baby pokemon, some legendaries, utterly useless Pokemon (I think noone is going to miss Qwilfish, Tangela, Farfetch'D), sea fossil Pokemon (Kabutos, Omanytes, Aerodactyl might stay). Their place is going to be taken by Pokemon of either similiar type combo (compensation) or some unusual types. In some time, I will post a list of rejected and new Pokemon.
* the alternative evolution of Grimer, Toxitive (as I decided to name it) is most likely going to be in final version, I just need to work a bit on its sprite (it also needs backsprite too).

I'm going to remove some rare/not very useful attacks, like Frustration, Spider Web, Kinesis, Thief, Spite, even Splash (if I do so, Magikarp will have Tail Whip instead of it) so I have room for new ones. I'm also adding few moves to learnsets of many families (for example Sandshrew family will now learn Rollout, Fury Swipes and Swords Dance on level-ups) to make them less boring than most 3-Pokemon families who learn more moves.

Right now I'm going to work on maps up to 3rd/4th gym, then edit scripts (plot), sidequests and then trainers and wild pokemon, and release a beta version so this project gets more attention. You can expect some screenshots in this week.

I'm usually not a fan of Fakemon at all, but you're evolution of Muk, Toxitive, and the way you are involving it in the story actually sounds very interesting!
At the moment, the sprite does look a little "flat" but it really isn't half bad the way it is! Keep it up!

Akwa wrote:

Are you saying here that Grimer will either evolve into Muk or Toxitive? Rather than Grimer->Muk->Toxitive? If that's not what you were trying to say, than I would consider it ;)

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

The case of Toxitive if postponed. I'm planning to give him a much bigger role than I planned in the beginning, but it needs lots of thinking. The plot is still in progress but I came up with many ideas already. I promise the storyline will be fun and interesting. At the moment I can say it's going to involve Team Rocket (not necessarily Rockets) trying to steal scientific works about ruins which have been discovered in different areas of region and use them for their own evil deeds. I already came up with a powerful unexpected twist ;)

Here's a bunch of screenshots:

A town located in mountains, hence the snow:
city1j.png scaled.php?server=593&filename=city2gym.png&res=landing
Tileset comes from Mateo's Christmas hack.

scaled.php?server=853&filename=route15.png&res=landing scaled.php?server=805&filename=route1w.png&res=landing scaled.php?server=27&filename=route2x.png&res=landing scaled.php?server=513&filename=cavel.png&res=landing
A route to another mountain town, blocked by rocks. I need to make Rock Smash a HM though. The cave entrance leads to the peak through an ice-cold cave.

scaled.php?server=833&filename=newtm.png&res=landing
New TMs are also being added.

scaled.php?server=641&filename=sableyen.png&res=landing scaled.php?server=594&filename=shroomish.png&res=landing scaled.php?server=834&filename=torkoal.png&res=landing scaled.php?server=259&filename=breelom.png&res=landing
And few new Pokemon screenies. Their stats are consistent to newer gens, everything has been edited (even Egg Groups). I still need to learn how to change footprints. Don't expect things from Gens IV and V though.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

I'm quite happy to see that there will be a snow tileset near the mountains! I think it's clever (and something I should have done but too lazy to do).
It makes sense that towns like Mahogany (or the equivalent in your hack) be covered in snow.

I think it'd be quite fun if Grimer was your starter Pokemon. Will Toxitive have that kind of role, or as an antagonist?

Sprites seem to need a little work but other than that looking great as always.

Re: Pokémon: Tweaks

This hack is starting to turn out pretty nice. Like kkj1116 asked earlier, I'd also like to know whether you're going to give out any beta releases before the final version of the project. Even if you haven't planned to do so, it would be a good thing because I've noticed there being many oddities or things that could have been improved with the first base versions playable of my own hack (Betas 2.1 and 3.0) which I had to fix later.

I too think that the 3rd gen pokemon would need some improvements. Torkoal is looking good though.
